National Health Service Corps

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program is a competitive Federal program of service-obligated scholarships for students of allopathic (M.D.), osteopathic (D.O.) medicine, certified nurse-midwifery, nurse practitioner education, physician assistant education and, if needed by the NHSC, students of other health professions. Scholarships are awarded to students based on the need of the NHSC and their ability to place trained providers in designated health professional shortage areas (HPSAs).

Purpose

The NHSC was designed by Congress to supply the NHSC and other components of the Public Health Service (PHS) with health care professional trained in those disciplines and specialties most needed to deliver quality primary health care services in areas designated by the PHS. Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) take precedence over all other placement locations when the NHSC assigns scholarship recipients. The mission of the NHSC is providing primary care to populations in areas of greatest need. NHSC services must be provided on a sliding fee scale.
